Indian maritime and shipping industry plays a vital role in growth of trade and commerce. India has a strategic location with regards to world’s shipping routes and has 7,517 km of coastline. We have a rich history of maritime trade as several trades & merchants came through sea routes. The maritime laws of India were originated in colonial era through various acts like Coastline Vessels Act (1838), Inland Steam Vessels Act (1917), Territorial Water Jurisdiction Act (1878), The Indian Merchant Shipping Act (1923), etc. However, after independence govt. of India implemented new rules & regulations to improve maritime & shipping Industry like Merchant Shipping Act (1958).
