  • Blocking Users: Users can block anyone who makes them feel uncomfortable, stopping all contact from that person.

Regulation of data privacy:

  • Personal Data Protection Bill: The Government has introduced the Personal Data Protection Bill, which aims to regulate how companies, including dating apps, collect, store, and process user data. Dating apps are required to follow these rules to safeguard user personal information and ensure it is not misused.
    • Data Breaches: If an app faces data breach or leaks user information, they may face penalties or be required to take correct action. This is part of government’s effort to strengthen data privacy laws.

Content Regulation and Safety:

  • Monitoring inappropriate content: the government has started requiring apps to monitor and remove harmful or illegal content, such as explicit material or hate speech. Dating apps must ensure they comply with the intermediary guidelines and digital media ethics code, which directs them to take down offensive material and prevent misuse.
    • Social Media Rules: with the growth of dating apps, new rules under the IT Rules,2021 have been implemented these rules require platform to have grievance redressal mechanism and to act quickly in case of abuse, harassment, or unlawful activity.[4]

               Sexual Harassment and Online Abuse

  • Preventing Harassment: The government is working on stricter laws to prevent sexual harassment and online abuse, which have been reported frequently on dating apps. These laws may make it easier for users to file complaints and for authorities to take action against offenders.
  • Punishing Cybercrimes: In cases of scams, cyberbullying, or threats, dating apps may be required to cooperate with authorities and hand over information to help with investigations. The Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Cyber Laws address such offenses.

Calls for Regulation of Online Dating

  • Moral Policing and Legal Scrutiny: In some parts of India, dating apps face moral scrutiny due to traditional views on relationships. Certain lawmakers and groups have raised concerns about the impact of these platforms on Indian culture. Although there have been calls for a ban or tighter regulation, there is no legal foundation for such actions at the moment.
  • Balancing Protection and Freedom: The challenge for the government is balancing user protection and privacy while allowing the freedom to connect and form relationships online. Any new regulations must take this balance into account.
