CRPF Death in Service Benefits 2026: Ex-Gratia, Risk Fund, Family Pension, Insurance, Gratuity & Bharat Ke Veer
A practical guide for the family and next of kin of CRPF personnel who die in the course of service, covering central ex-gratia, extraordinary/liberalized family pension, Risk Fund assistance, insurance, gratuity, leave encashment, Bharat Ke Veer and related welfare benefits.
Current MHA material records ₹25 lakh for death on duty and ₹35 lakh for specified active-duty/operational deaths.
Liberalized or extraordinary family pension may apply under the CCS (Extraordinary Pension) Rules, 2023.
DCRG, leave encashment, CGEGIS/insurance and other admissible retirement dues may also be payable.
Risk Fund, Bharat Ke Veer, force-level welfare funds and State/UT assistance may provide additional support.
Official MHA material issued in 2024–2025 confirms that the benefits available to families and next of kin of CAPF personnel include central ex-gratia, liberalized/extraordinary family pension, death-cum-retirement gratuity, leave encashment, force-level welfare assistance, Bharat Ke Veer support, insurance and other concessions. For CRPF-specific information, the Force also maintains a financial-benefits page. Because some older welfare tables may continue to display superseded amounts, the latest Government/MHA sanction should always be verified before calculating entitlement.

1. Central ex-gratia compensation
Current MHA material records the major central ex-gratia rates as follows:
| Category | Current amount reflected in MHA material |
|---|---|
| Death due to accident in bona fide Government duty | ₹25 lakh |
| Death in specified operational circumstances, including border skirmishes / action against militants, terrorists, extremists and certain high-risk situations | ₹35 lakh |
The classification of the casualty is critical. The family should obtain the official casualty classification, death certificate, service casualty report and sanction order rather than relying only on a verbal description such as “death on duty.”
2. Liberalized / extraordinary family pension
Depending on the circumstances of death, the family may be entitled to benefits under the CCS (Extraordinary Pension) Rules, 2023. The applicable category and pension rate depend on whether the death is attributable to or aggravated by Government service and the precise casualty classification.
For ordinary CRPF family-pension disputes, competing claims and delayed payment, see our CRPF Family Pension After Death in Service guide.
3. Death-cum-retirement gratuity and leave encashment
Death-cum-retirement gratuity and leave encashment are separate from ex-gratia compensation. Current MHA material records that the maximum DCRG ceiling has been enhanced to ₹25 lakh. The actual amount payable depends on qualifying service, emoluments and the governing pension rules.
4. CRPF Risk Fund and welfare assistance
CRPF and CAPF personnel may be covered by force-level Risk Fund, Central Welfare Fund or other benevolent/welfare arrangements. MHA material from April 2025 records enhancement of Risk Fund assistance from ₹20 lakh to ₹30 lakh. Families should therefore verify the current CRPF sanction rather than relying on an older force webpage that may still display earlier figures.
5. Bharat Ke Veer assistance
For eligible operational casualties, public contribution and corpus-based assistance under Bharat Ke Veer may supplement statutory benefits. Recent MHA material records public contribution support up to ₹25 lakh and additional corpus assistance in specified cases, including support for parents of married deceased personnel.
6. CAPF Salary Package insurance
Accidental death insurance under the Central Armed Police Forces Salary Package may provide a substantial separate benefit. MHA material from April 2025 records accidental-death insurance coverage under the CAPF salary package at up to ₹1.10 crore after enhancement. The actual insurance entitlement depends on the bank package, account status, policy conditions and cause of death.
7. State / UT compensation
Many State Governments and Union Territories provide additional ex-gratia or compensation to the families of CAPF personnel who die in specified circumstances. This entitlement is separate from central benefits and depends on the domicile, posting, casualty classification and the rules of the concerned State/UT.
8. Operational Casualty Certificate and linked concessions
Where applicable, an Operational Casualty Certificate may unlock additional benefits such as travel concessions, petroleum-retail outlet eligibility and other welfare measures. The certificate should be applied for or obtained promptly if the casualty qualifies.
9. Education benefits for children
Families may also be eligible for the Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme and reserved/allocated seats for professional education such as MBBS/BDS, subject to the governing eligibility conditions and annual scheme rules.
10. Compassionate appointment
Compassionate appointment is not an automatic consequence of death in service. It is governed by the applicable scheme, dependency, eligibility, vacancy/ceiling conditions and comparative assessment. For a focused guide, see CRPF Compassionate Appointment After Death in Service.
11. Common reasons benefits get delayed
- casualty not yet formally classified;
- nomination or family details not updated in service records;
- competing spouse / dependant claims;
- missing death certificate or service casualty report;
- bank / insurance documentation incomplete;
- delay in sanction of Risk Fund or welfare assistance;
- dispute over attributability to service;
- difference between departmental records and civil documents;
- unresolved pension or PPO processing.
12. What documents should the family collect?
- death certificate;
- casualty report / casualty classification;
- service particulars;
- nomination forms;
- marriage certificate where relevant;
- birth certificates of children;
- dependency documents;
- bank account and CAPF salary-package documents;
- insurance claim forms;
- family pension papers;
- gratuity and leave-encashment papers;
- Risk Fund / welfare-fund applications;
- Bharat Ke Veer documentation;
- Operational Casualty Certificate;
- State/UT ex-gratia application papers;
- all sanction and rejection orders.
13. What if a benefit is denied or underpaid?
First identify the exact scheme and sanctioning authority. A representation should attach the governing order, casualty classification, service record and benefit calculation. If the dispute remains unresolved, the appropriate departmental and constitutional remedy can be considered. For ordinary CRPF personnel, such service/welfare disputes generally fall within High Court writ jurisdiction rather than the Armed Forces Tribunal.
14. Frequently asked questions
Is central ex-gratia the only payment after a CRPF death in service?
No. It may be only one component. Family pension, gratuity, leave encashment, Risk Fund, insurance, Bharat Ke Veer and State/UT compensation may also apply.
What is the current central ex-gratia amount?
Recent MHA material records ₹25 lakh for death due to accidents during bona fide Government duty and ₹35 lakh for specified operational/active-duty deaths.
Can parents receive separate financial assistance?
Yes, depending on the applicable scheme. Bharat Ke Veer corpus assistance and force-level welfare schemes may provide separate support in specified cases.
Can a family claim insurance in addition to ex-gratia?
Yes, if the deceased was covered under the applicable CAPF salary-package insurance and the policy conditions are satisfied.
Why do CRPF and MHA webpages sometimes show different amounts?
Some welfare pages may not immediately reflect later enhancements. The latest Government/MHA sanction or circular should be treated as controlling for current entitlement.
