The OROP (One Rank One Pension) Pension Table for 2024 was revised on December 23, 2022, benefiting about 25.13 lakh armed forces pensioners. This amendment ensures that all retired military personnel of the same rank and service period receive equal pensions, addressing previous disparities. Pensions will be recalculated every five years, and arrears from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2022, are included. The revised pension rates and likely arrears for various ranks are detailed in the table Above .
The Indian government implemented the One Rank One Pension (OROP) policy to ensure that military personnel who retire with the same rank and years of service receive the same pension, irrespective of their retirement year. Previously, pensions were based on the pay commission’s recommendations at the time of retirement, leading to significant differences in pension amounts for personnel with the same rank and service duration who retired in different years.
Benefits of OROP Pension Table
The key benefits of the OROP Pension Table include:
- Equal pension distribution for armed services members.
- Recalculation of pensions for past retirees based on 2013 standards.
- Bridging the gap between current pensions and those of past pensioners.
- Establishing a baseline average for minimum and maximum pensions for 2013 retirees of the same rank and service duration.
- Preserving above-average pensions.
- Adjusting pensions every five years.
Revised OROP Pension Table
The OROP Revision, approved following a petition for an extension until March 15, 2024, ensures future pensions for past pensioners based on the minimum and maximum averages of 2018 pensions for retired Defense Force officers of the same rank and service length.
Revised OROP Scheme: Benefits for 30 Lakh Armed Forces Retirees
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has proposed a significant revision to the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme, benefiting approximately 30 lakh retired Armed Forces personnel and their families. This revision considers current pay scales and allowances, reflecting the economic conditions and sacrifices made by these individuals. This is the second major revision, with the first in 2019. Pensions will be calculated based on the average of the minimum and maximum pensions for 2023 retirees of the same rank and service length.
OROP 3 Revised Pension 2024 Notification & Expectation
According to the Defence Ministry’s 2015 letter, pensions will be recalibrated every five years. The first adjustment under OROP was on July 1, 2019, with the next on July 1, 2024. The revised pension for qualifying Defence Forces pensioners and family pensioners will be based on the average pensions of 2023 retirees of the same rank and service length. Amounts exceeding this average will be safeguarded. From July 1, 2024, a Sepoy will receive Rs. 21,785, a Naik Rs. 22,875, a Havaldar Rs. 23,050, an Nb Subedar Rs. 27,988, a Sub Major Rs. 39,350, and a Major Rs. 72,370.
Court Criticizes Centre Over OROP Dues
The Supreme Court of India criticized the Centre for the delay in disbursing One Rank One Pension (OROP) arrears to retired military personnel. The court questioned the government on the prolonged time taken to clear these dues and emphasized the importance of timely payment to ensure the financial security of the veterans.
